Dobrý Den (Good Morning)

Advancing from “Thinking” to “Doing”, including getting my recycled plastic containers for mixing paints, took not only intention and time but also lots of organization and learning. I have not started painting yet, though I have been working with ideas and making drafts with my pastels.

I have been mostly busy writing down and translating shopping lists to be able to get my groceries. I am involved with the language in many different levels. The challenge to learn how to communicate at a very basic level makes me reflect about language, and specifically visual language and its ramifications. The power of images fascinates people so much that they examine the images they frenetically make with their digital cameras, even tough the real thing, the object, the space is there, just in front of them. I observed how people would be looking at the image of the castle while the actual the castle is right there, they could touch the walls! What is this phenomenon all about? Does the image reveal something that my raw eyes cannot catch? Is the image a gate to access other dimensions of reality? What is it?

Anyway, thinking is good but we need the body. The first priority is to eat healthy. How I nourish my body is intrinsically connected with my art. Learning to walk around town, finding out where the Health Food Store is and tasting fantastic fresh strawberries from local farmers has kept me away from painting. However, I have already prepared the materials and plan to start painting daily after 2:00 pm. After 2 pm the varanda—which I have turned into my temporary studio space—is in shade. In the morning the sun shines directly there, making it too hot to work ‘al fresco.’

This attention to the food and the way I feed my body directly influnences the way I think of my work. The relationship between the body and the mind, the integration, the harmony (or dis-harmony)… If my body is more energetic, pure and alive, my art reflects this state of being and, hopefully, this will also affect the viewer positively.

I checked out some local galleries and spent hours touching prints. I have learnt that Krumlov has a very strong and old printing tradition. What a gift from existence, because I love printmaking so much! I was delighted to be able to feel with my fingers the indents left by the press. I saw a variety of prints available, from recent proofs to sophisticated historical editions.

At my own pace, I am developing the discipline I intend to find in this journey. In the mornings I go for walks and look after my food for the day and after 2 pm I will be painting. I can have little breaks to refresh myself in the waters of River Vltava.
